Silke Rys – kunst/art

Silke is a restless creative always looking for new skills and materials to work with. Starting from illustration, she mostly works with textiles and ceramics. Her creations are made to be experienced in their tactility rather than just viewed.

Where did it all begin?

As a child, with my glue stick and scissors in hand jumping from one hobby to the next. My love for drawing brought me to study graphic storytelling in Brussels. During that time I couldn’t stop looking for new ways to create and kept working with my hands. Eventually illustrating felt too distant and flat. I wanted to make three dimensional images and create an experience for the viewer, so it wasn’t just me getting to hold the materials in my hands. I’ve become incredibly fascinated by the materials I use. They often tell a story on their own, turning the materiality of the work into the visual language.

What is the worst advice you’ve heard?

I think the worst advice often comes from people who see art as a commodity and from education that wants to turn artists into business owners. How you should present yourself, what kind of work people buy, who to network with to make it as an artist.

At the same time this advice is also very necessary in a system of producer and client where worth is calculated in money and sales. Unfortunately all this severely limits your creative freedom as a developing artist.

Most beautiful moment during the creative process?

The most beautiful moment for me is the moment an idea pops into my head and everything is still possible. It’s the energy that comes with that idea and the tingling in my hands thinking about working with certain materials and a color palette. I also love everything I get to learn during the research period. And then of course, after the struggle of unforeseen circumstances, the moment I see the result and can share it with the world.

Wat inspireert je niet?

Geautomatiseerde processen, AI, overconsumptie en individualisme.

What doesn’t inspire you?

Automated processes, AI, overconsumption and individualism.

What are you proud of?

To have adapted my life to the point where I don’t need a lot of money to survive and I can work as an artist full time. I’m also proud of learning so many things in the process and surrounding myself with very inspiring people along the way.

Who would you like to meet or who would you like to work with?

Ulla von Brandenburg. I once saw an exposition of hers in Palais de Tokyo, and I was so impressed by the way she fully embraced the space by draping colorful curtains, big woven baskets and piles of straw. I admire the way she brings different cultural worlds together in her performances and would love to speak to her about it.

Lievelingsmateriaal?

Wol. (lacht)

Favorite material?

Wool. Recently I got into processing it myself, from sheep to thread. I’m obsessed. (laughs)

What would you have done, if not this?

It’s hard to imagine that. Maybe I would have been a sailor or shepherd?

What was your biggest moment of doubt?

I’m a very decisive person overall, but a continuous thing I struggle with is if I’m using my platform as an artist in the right way. Which stories I should be telling, how political I can make my work while still staying true to my creative self.

Wie is jouw grootste steunpilaar?

Who is your biggest supporter?

A difficult question… Lots of people are indispensable and support me in numerous ways but I can’t list them all. My mom is definitely my first and biggest fan. My friend Lieke has been at my side for a long time now cheering me on for every weird idea I have. We share an atelier and work together in our circus collective. Without her I would never have gotten where I am now.

Lievelingsbeeld/Favorite image?

Wat is je mooiste zin/What is to you the most beautiful sentence?

“How lucky we are, to be surrounded by things that grow”

What do you still want to do?

I have a long list of things I want to learn, but what I mostly want to do is grow towards bringing people together with textile projects.

Where do you work?

My atelier is located in an old monastery, I’m working in the washing room, where the sisters would do the ironing of bed sheets. The rest of the building is taken up by different organisations, a painters workshop and a circus space. All surrounded by a stunning view of the forest and fields.
